Possible new EU sanctions on Congo

On 6 March 2017, the EU Council published a press release expressing its concern on the political situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (“DRC”), caused by the refusal of President Joseph Kabila to stand down at the end of his term, the blockage in the implementation of the inclusive political agreement of 31 December 2016, as well as by the security situation in several parts of the country, where the disproportionate use of force has been observed. In response to these developments the EU has informed the DRC that it is ready to impose new restrictive measures.
