The US has terminated the national emergency related to Myanmar/Burma, lifting the sanctions that were imposed on the country in 1997 with respect to the actions and policies of the Government of Myanmar/Burma, in particular a deepening pattern of severe repression by the State Law and Order Restoration Council, the then-governing regime in Myanmar/Burma. According to President Obama, that pattern of repression has been significantly altered by Myanmar’s/Burma’s substantial advances to promote democracy, including historic elections in November 2015 that resulted in the former opposition party, the National League for Democracy, winning a majority of seats in the national parliament and the formation of a democratically elected, civilian-led government; the release of many political prisoners; and greater enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and freedom of association and peaceful assembly. This has given rise to the lifting of the remaining sanctions on the country. The Executive Order lifting the sanctions can be found here. The US Treasury has indictated, however, that it will continue to investigate apparent violations of the Myanmar/Burma sanctions during the applicability of the sanctions. Pending investigations will also be continued, according to US Treasury.
