Iran requests meeting of E3+3 to discuss JCPOA after US sanctions extention

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif has formally submitted a request with Europe’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini for a meeting of the E3+3 commission (Iran, the US, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia) that oversees the nuclear deal with world powers, to complain about United States’ symbolical renewal of its Iran Sanctions Act earlier this month. The United States Congress voted earlier this month in favour of a renewal of the Iran Sanctions Act for another 10 years. This renewal merely is a symbolic or formal act by US Congress, as the act’s measures are suspended as long as the nuclear deal remains in place. Presidant Obama made clear that the renewal was pointless, but allowed it to become law without signing it. However, the renewal is perceived by Iran as a provocation and deemed to be in “clear violation” of the JCPOA. As an answer to the alleged US breach of the JCPOA, President Rouhani ordered the country’s Atomic Energy Organization (AEOI) to start certain nuclear activities. It is therefore interesting to see what will come out of the meeting. B&A Law will keep you updated on this subject.
