US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power has stated that the ballistic missile test carried out by Iran on 10 October was “a clear violation” of UN sanctions, and that the United States has confirmed that the missile launched was “inherently capable of delivering a nuclear weapon”. This was the first missile tested by Iran since the JCPOA nuclear deal was agreed between Iran and the E3/EU+3 in last July. UN Resolution 1929 (2010) prohibits Iran from undertaking “any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using ballistic missile technology”.
President Obama emphasised that the JCPOA was “entirely separate” and did not resolve all areas of dispute with Iran, indicating that “we are going to have to continue to put pressure on Iran through the international community”. Ambassador Power has now repeated this, stating that the US would “continue to press the Security Council for an appropriate response to Iran’s disregard for its international obligations”.
The test carried out by Iran and the response from the US makes it clear that tensions regarding Iran have not been cleared in full yet. We advise to still proceed cautiously when dealing with Iran.
